What causes ingrown hairs? How do you get rid of them and prevent them?

There is a spot on the back of my leg where I always seem to get an ingrown hair, is there a reason it is always in this location? How do I prevent this?

Ingrown hairs are hairs that grow out slightly and then curl back and penetrate the skin. This results in redness, tenderness and swelling at the site of penetration. Ingrown hairs are a fairly common problem. A common cause of ingrown hairs is chronic irritation to the hair shaft and follicle opening. This irritation may be due to frequent and close shaving or friction from tight clothing or belts. People with curly hair tend to have more ingrown hairs than do those with straight hair.

To prevent ingrown hairs, reduce friction and irritation in the affected areas. Shaving tips that may help prevent ingrown hairs include:

Shave hair a little longer than you normally do

Avoid repeated razor strokes over the same area

Shave in the direction of hair growth

Many ingrown hairs will eventually grow out by themselves and don't need treatment. See a dermatologist if you get ingrown hairs all the time or if the pain of an ingrown hair persists for more than a few days. When needed, treatment may include:

Topical antiseptics

Antibiotics, if an infection is present

Permanent hair removal, in stubborn cases

I hope this was beneficial,Good Luck!!! :)

If the spot you're talking about is inflamed, you have to treat it with anti-biotic ointment like (fucidin) , then to prevent ingrown hair, you have to shave when the skin is wet and the pores are open from the hot steam in the shower, meaning, shave when you have spent enough time in the shower for your pores to open and the skin to get soft. Also, change razors, don't use dull ones and put a good shaving foam, baby oil or conditioner as u shave . After shaving , always moisurize when skin is damp, not wet , not dry but most important thing to do to prevent ingrown hair is to exfoliate your skin at least once a week.

Ingrown hairs are caused by the hair growing back into the skin either by curling when on the outside of your skin or curling in the follicle itself. Sometimes people say shaving gives you ingrown hairs but I beg to differ. It's not from shaving but it's from the hair, pubic hair and a man's facial hair is much more coarse and kinky and more easily able to curl under the skin or grow back in. Hairs that are ingrown on an arm or a woman's leg are because the hair was growing out but there was dead skin in the way.

With most ingrown hairs you can prevent them by exfoliating the area. If the red bump from it starts to get bigger, itchy or have a white head, you need to get the hair out otherwise it will become infected.

The end of the hair is trapped underneath the surface. It is a place where either your jeans or socks is always rubbing on that area. Not allowing the end of the hair to surface. Try exfoliating before your shave and then again a few days later.

Ingrown hair is a condition where the hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin. It may or may not be accompanied by an infection of the hair follicle. It is also typically where ever you sweat or shave. You can try putting carmex chap stick (sounds retarded but it works) as well as antobiotic creams like norspion or what not. Really you should call your DR and ask his thoughts to this but that should prevent and help you. Also if it's on your face try wetting your face and using a toothpaste as a mask until you can't stand it on there then use carmex after washing off the tooth paste and patting dry. I hope this helps.
